I pretend
To be a prisoner
I really do
Pretend that shackles
Are holding me down
For sure
I look at my hands
Like they are tied together
Like I can’t move
Like I’m stuck

You see
I pretend
To be a prisoner
Although I am not sure
Who is guarding me
Making sure
I don’t escape
Sometimes
I could bet
That it is real
Other times
I know
I’m in my head

It seems
I pretend
To be a prisoner
For reasons
I’m not sure of
Pretend
That I can see that cage
Surrounding me
Pretend
That I long
For the sweet escape
And I know
What I have to do

I pretend
My cage
Is open
I pretend
That I can leave
And I know
That this time
I don’t have to pretend
This time
I am finally free
